Eusébe Jaojoby - or just Jaojoby - has within the last few years become the most popular musician in Madagascar. However, he is by no means a newcomer in the business. Jaojoby was born in 1955 in Amboangibe in the north of Madagascar. Already as a child he sang in the local Catholic church. At the age of 15 he travelled to the regional capital of Antsiranana (Diego Suarez), where he started singing with the group "Los Matadores" in a local night club. By 1975, he had formed his own band, and in 1976, at the age of 21, he recorded his first two singles. In 1980, he left the province to pursue further studies of sociology at the University of Antananarivo in the capital of Madagascar. He soon found employment as a journalist at the national radio and in the evenings he sang at the night club at Hilton Hotel. In 1984, he went back to his home province of Antsiranana to become "Chief of Service" of Antsiranana Province's Office of Information. Jaojoby had his first appearance on the international music scene with his song "Samy Mandeha Samy Mitady" which was included on the compilation album "Les Maître du Salegy", released in France in 1987. In 1992, his first CD, "Jaojoby Salegy", was cut by the label "Rogue Records" in London. In 1994, he shifted to the French record company "Label Bleu Indigo", which released his second CD "Velono". By then, though having advanced to Attaché de Presse at the Ministry of Transportation, Meterology and Tourism, he had quit his job to become a full time musician. Since his second album, he has nearly every year played at the various World Music festivals in Europe (e.g., in the UK, France, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Portugal), but has also toured in Canada, the Ivory Coast, Singapore and the islands of the Indian Ocean. In 1998, still on "Label Bleu Indigo", Jaojoby's third and most recent CD, "E, Tiako" hit the stores. The same year he received the award "Artist of the Year" in Madagascar. Being a family-man, Jaojoby always has his wife, two daughters and a son with him on stage. Jaojoby composes and writes all his songs himself. Recently he composed a song encouraging the use of condoms to support the fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS. Jaojoby accepted the offer to become the Goodwill Ambassador for UNFPA in Madagascar in July 1999. He will especially assist the UNFPA in the work with the Malagasy youth on issues such as reproductive health – e.g., information on STDs and HIV/AIDS, prevention of unwanted pregnancies, and encouragement of youth to a responsible behaviour.
