- The hour :

If France is in hour of summer, add 1 hour (1 Hour in Paris = 2 Hour in Tana),
otherwise add 2 hours (1 Hour in Paris = 3 Hour in Tana)

- The Language:


French is used very extensively in the island. Even in the remote regions, we can meet aged people speaking perfectly this language.

- Formalities :

Passeport : A visa is obligatory for Madagascar. You can get it either:

Before leaving : by the embassy from Madagascar to Paris or by the Consulates of Madagascar in the cities where these are present.

At your arrival: at Ivato Airport.

- The vaccines :

The vaccines: nothing is obligatory but it is good to follow the advices of the WHO to this topic.
However, the vaccines against hepatitis A and B, the typhoid fever and the cholera are advisable. To make itself prescribe a treatment against paludism.

- Money :


The Malagasy franc is very fluctuating. Currently, 1 Euro is about 7.000 Malagasy Francs. The Malagasy Franc is not exportable.

Foreign currencies (Dollars, Euros...) are accepted, but travellers checks and credit cards (Visa,Mastercard) are accepted only in some towns.


- Cautions to take :

Some medicines against «tourista» (colicalm, ercéfuryl, buscopan or other), and products against the mosquitos (citronella or tablets,...).
It is more prudent to foresee a small emergency kit.
Keep permanently on you everything that is indispensable (medicines or personal effects of first necessity) to palliate possible delays of luggage.


- The electricity :

Often, the hotels in provinces function with Electrogen-groups.
Cuts of electricity are frequent.
Foresee torch either if all is in general planned to palliate these incidents.
Some powerful torchlights are indispensable for some nocturnal visits of the reserves, or to admire some underground cave...
And of course, don't forget the batteries of spare.


- To phone in Madagascar:


The code of the country is 261. To call a correspondent on stationary telephone in Madagascar, compose:
00 261 + 20 (Telma indicative) + regional indicative (22 for Antananarivo) and the 5 numbers of the correspondent.

To call a portable, the indicatives are 30 for Intercel (00 261 30 and the 5 numbers of the correspondent), 32 for Antaris (00 261 32 and the 5 numbers of the correspondent), and 33 for Madacom (00 261 33 and the 5 numbers of the correspondent).

Some calling cards are almost everywhere available in the island, to use in the phone booths or publiphones.


- Various :

The walking shoes that cover the ankles,
of the gloves if you intend to make some stopovers in the massifs.
